Oaks are the Treasure Coast — we keep the good ones and know the bad ones
Half the trees in Port St. Lucie are oaks, and they're not all the same. A live oak is worth protecting for a century; a laurel oak is a fast, short-lived tree that gets dangerous with age. Knowing the difference is the whole job.
Oaks define Port St. Lucie's older sections and shade half its yards, and most of our work is helping people tell a keeper from a hazard. Live oaks (Quercus virginiana) — the broad, low, spreading ones — are structurally strong, wind-tolerant and long-lived; the right move is almost always to prune and keep them. Laurel and water oaks (Quercus laurifolia and nigra) grow fast, look similar when young, and then decline: they hollow out at 40 to 60 years, drop limbs, and fail in storms. A lot of what looks like a mature shade tree in PSL is a laurel oak reaching the end of its run.
We give oaks an honest arborist assessment — sound or declining, keep or remove — and then either prune them properly (structural cuts, deadwood, end-weight reduction, never topping) or take them down safely when they're past saving. We won't sell you a removal on a healthy live oak, and we won't tell you a hollow laurel oak is fine.

Questions we get about oak & hardwood care
How do I know if my oak is a live oak or a laurel oak?
Live oaks have small, stiff, dark-green leaves, a broad low spreading form, and they hold their leaves nearly year-round. Laurel oaks are taller and more upright, with larger, thinner leaves, and they drop them in late winter. The easiest answer: have our arborist look — it takes two minutes and it decides whether you prune or plan to remove.
My oak looks healthy but it's huge and over the house — is it a risk?
Size alone isn't a defect. A big healthy live oak over the house is usually fine and just wants deadwood removed and its end-weight reduced. A big laurel oak over the house is a different conversation, because the failure mode is internal decay you can't see from the ground. We assess for actual defects, not just size.
There's a mushroom shelf growing at the base of my oak — does it have to come down?
Not automatically, but it's a warning sign: shelf fungus at the base often means root or butt decay, which is the failure that drops the whole tree. We evaluate how much sound wood is left and give you a real risk read rather than reacting to the mushroom alone.
Can you save my oak with cabling instead of removing it?
Sometimes. If an otherwise sound oak has a weak two-trunk union, a cable high in the canopy can reduce the chance of a split and buy years. If the wood is already decayed, cabling just delays the inevitable and we'll tell you so.
